David Hockney's private funeral attended by only two mourners

David Hockney’s funeral, held last week, was a private affair attended by only two people, in accordance with the artist’s final wishes. The British painter, who died at the age of 91, had requested that only his partner and great‑nephew be present at the ceremony, with memorial services planned in the locations where he had lived and worked.

The mourners were 61‑year‑old partner Jean‑Pierre Gonçalves de Lima and 33‑year‑old great‑nephew Richard Hockney, a photographer who had assisted the artist and often modeled for him. Both men serve as trustees of the David Hockney Foundation, established by the artist in 2008 to preserve and promote his legacy.

The limited attendance reflected Hockney’s desire for a quiet farewell, while the foundation will oversee the broader memorial events that will celebrate his life and work across the cities that shaped his career.
