Datacentres push Microsoft, Amazon, Google emissions to one‑third of France's

Microsoft, Amazon and Google have confirmed that their net‑zero targets remain unchanged, even as a surge in data‑centre construction has pushed their combined emissions higher. The three firms reported a 19 % rise in carbon output over the last year, largely attributable to the expansion of their server‑farm infrastructure.

In the financial year ending March 2026, the trio released a total of 119 million metric tonnes of CO₂ equivalent. This figure represents roughly one‑third of France’s national emissions, underscoring the scale of the tech sector’s environmental footprint. Each company has reiterated its commitment to offsetting or eliminating these emissions through renewable energy projects, carbon‑capture technologies, and other sustainability initiatives.

Despite the uptick, the companies maintain that their long‑term net‑zero objectives are still attainable. They continue to invest in low‑carbon solutions and pledge to align future growth with climate‑friendly practices, aiming to balance the immediate demands of expanding digital services with broader environmental responsibilities.
