Danish Refugee Council warns Ebola outbreak strains DRC humanitarian aid

The Danish Refugee Council (DRC) has warned that the latest Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo is deepening an already fragile humanitarian landscape. In a recent report, the organization emphasized that the response to the health emergency must not erode the aid programmes that sustain vulnerable communities, noting that the crisis threatens to divert resources from essential services such as food assistance, shelter and protection.

Speaking to France 24, DRC Secretary‑General Charlotte Slente described a pre‑existing “funding crisis” that has now been compounded by the Ebola threat. She cautioned that the influx of resources earmarked for Ebola response risks pulling financial support away from broader humanitarian operations, potentially leaving critical aid gaps as the outbreak spreads. The council’s alert underscores the need for coordinated funding that safeguards both disease control measures and the ongoing assistance required by affected populations.
