Dangote Industries plans massive offshore refinery in Kenya

Kenya is poised to become a central energy hub in East Africa after Dangote Industries announced plans to construct a large-scale oil refinery on the Indian Ocean coast near Mombasa. The project, valued at several billion dollars, will be the first integrated refinery of its kind in the region, targeting a processing capacity of up to 200,000 barrels per day and incorporating storage, petrochemical, and distribution facilities. Kenyan authorities have granted preliminary approvals, and the company expects to begin construction within the next year, with commercial operations slated for the mid‑2020s.

If completed, the refinery could significantly alter the regional fuel market by reducing Kenya’s reliance on imported refined products, lowering transport costs, and creating a surplus for export to neighboring countries such as Uganda, Tanzania and the Democratic Republic of Congo. The development is also expected to generate thousands of jobs, stimulate ancillary industries, and contribute to government revenue through taxes and royalties. Stakeholders view the initiative as a catalyst for broader economic growth and a step toward greater energy security for East Africa.
