Otero Alcántara, a prominent figure in the island’s artistic and activist circles, was sentenced in 2022 for “insulting national symbols, contempt and disturbing the public order,” charges stemming from his involvement in the 2021 protests that swept Cuba.

Amnesty International has designated Otero Alcántara a prisoner of conscience, noting that his imprisonment was politically motivated. The announcement of his travel authorization marks the first public update on his whereabouts since his release, offering a potential avenue for him to continue his advocacy abroad.
