COVID-19 vaccine boosters may guard against future animal coronaviruses, study shows
Cambridge researchers have found that COVID‑19 vaccine boosters not only reinforce protection against SARS‑CoV‑2, the virus that caused the recent global pandemic, but may also offer a shield against certain future coronaviruses that could jump from animals to humans. The study, published in a peer‑reviewed journal, examined immune responses in individuals who received a booster dose of a mRNA vaccine and identified an expanded repertoire of neutralising antibodies that recognise a range of related coronavirus strains.
The investigators used serum samples taken before and after the booster to test reactivity against a panel of animal‑derived coronaviruses that have previously been identified as potential zoonotic threats. They observed that the booster increased antibody titres against several of these strains, suggesting that the enhanced immunity could reduce the likelihood of a new coronavirus outbreak originating from wildlife reservoirs. The findings support the idea that regular booster campaigns could play a dual role in controlling the current pandemic and mitigating future zoonotic spillovers.
These results underscore the importance of maintaining high vaccination coverage and timely booster administration as part of a broader strategy to anticipate and curb emerging coronavirus threats.
