Cooler weather and rain forecast bring relief to southwestern France wildfires

Higher humidity, cooler temperatures and a forecast of rain have lifted hopes of relief for a parched region of southwestern France that has been ravaged by wildfires. Local officials reported a “rather calm” night, with the blaze showing no signs of expansion beyond the already affected area.

The fires have scorched an area roughly four times the size of Paris, covering 42,000 hectares. Despite the extensive damage, the main fire has remained contained, a development that has been welcomed by authorities and emergency services operating in the region.
