Colombian President Petro calls for global opposition to potential US invasion of Cuba

Bogotá – Colombian President Gustavo Petro called on the international community on Monday to rally against what he described as a “potential U.S. invasion of Cuba,” warning that any such action would destabilize the Caribbean region and undermine hemispheric security. Speaking at a press conference in the presidential palace, Petro said he had received credible intelligence indicating that the United States was considering a military operation aimed at toppling Cuba’s socialist government, and he urged regional allies, multilateral bodies and civil society to intervene diplomatically to prevent escalation.

Petro’s remarks came amid heightened U.S.-Cuba tensions over sanctions, migration pressures and the island’s alignment with left‑leaning governments in Latin America. He cited recent statements from U.S. officials about “protecting American interests” in the region and referenced historical precedents, such as the 1961 Bay of Pigs invasion, to underscore the risks of renewed conflict. While the Cuban Ministry of Foreign Affairs has not officially confirmed any imminent threat, it condemned the alleged U.S. plans as “imperialist aggression.” Petro concluded by urging the United Nations and the Organization of American States to convene an emergency session to address the issue, emphasizing that collective diplomatic action is the only viable path to preserve peace and sovereignty in the Caribbean.
