Cochrane Review Finds No Evidence Embryo Transfer Prep Improves IVF Success

A recent Cochrane systematic review has found that the various preparation techniques used before embryo transfer in in‑vitro fertilisation (IVF) do not demonstrably improve pregnancy rates. The review, which analysed data from a small number of studies of variable quality, concluded that the evidence remains inconclusive and that no single protocol can be recommended as superior.

The techniques examined included different methods of preparing the uterine lining, such as hormonal stimulation, endometrial scratching, and the use of intrauterine devices, as well as timing strategies for embryo transfer. While clinicians often consider these steps critical to optimise implantation, the review’s authors noted that the limited sample sizes and methodological weaknesses of the available trials prevented any firm conclusions about their effectiveness.

The authors call for larger, well‑designed studies to clarify whether any specific preparation method truly enhances IVF success. Until such evidence emerges, practitioners will likely continue to rely on individual clinical judgment and patient preference when selecting pre‑transfer protocols.
