Climate Advisers Say Heathrow Third Runway Cannot Be Approved

Government climate advisers have warned that Heathrow Airport’s proposed third runway cannot be approved under the nation’s current climate policies. In a briefing to the Cabinet, the advisers highlighted that the expansion would significantly increase carbon emissions, running counter to the UK’s legally binding net‑zero targets and the emissions reduction commitments outlined in the 2023 Climate Change Act.

The advisers cited the latest emissions modelling, which shows the new runway would add several million tonnes of CO₂ annually, exceeding the allowances set for the aviation sector in the national climate strategy.
