Classroom dust bacteria linked to reduced lung function in children
Researchers presented at the European Respiratory Society (ERS) Congress in Barcelona that common bacteria identified in classroom dust are linked to reduced lung function in children. The study, conducted across multiple schools, involved collecting dust samples from classrooms and analyzing their microbial composition alongside pulmonary function tests performed on the attending pupils. Results indicated a statistically significant association between the presence of specific bacterial taxa in the indoor environment and lower measures of forced expiratory volume in children, suggesting that routine exposure to these microorganisms may adversely affect respiratory health during a critical period of lung development.
