CJP protests highlight aspirations of India's Generation Z

The “politics of aspiration”—the growing trend of young people using politics as a vehicle for personal and collective advancement—has begun to reshape Generation Z across the globe. In countries such as Brazil, South Africa, and the United States, students and early‑career professionals are increasingly demanding policies that promise upward mobility, higher education, and job creation, and they are mobilising through social media and grassroots organisations. This shift is being described by scholars as a new form of political engagement that blends civic participation with a strong focus on individual opportunity.

In India, the same forces are gaining momentum, but the country’s political response has been uneven. While the ruling coalition has launched initiatives such as the National Education Policy 2024 and the Digital India program, critics argue that these measures fall short of addressing the specific aspirations of Gen Z, who are looking for transparent career pathways, skill development, and inclusive governance. Recent surveys indicate that a majority of Indian youth feel that current political rhetoric does not translate into tangible opportunities, prompting calls for more targeted reforms in education, employment, and digital infrastructure.

The window for India to harness this generational shift remains open. By aligning policy frameworks with the aspirations of young citizens—through expanded vocational training, stronger public‑private partnerships, and greater participation of youth in decision‑making bodies—the country could transform the politics of aspiration into a catalyst for inclusive growth. Such an approach would not only meet the expectations of Generation Z but also strengthen India’s long‑term socio‑economic resilience.
