China’s Tianwen-2 probe reaches asteroid after 1‑billion km journey
China’s Tianwen‑2 asteroid‑sampling probe reached its target on Monday, the China National Space Administration (CNSA) announced. The spacecraft, launched in 2021, has traveled roughly 1 billion kilometres (620 million miles) over a period of more than a year to arrive at the near‑Earth asteroid 2019 R1.
Tianwen‑2 is designed to collect surface material from the asteroid and return it to Earth for scientific analysis. The probe’s journey included a complex trajectory that involved multiple gravity‑assist manoeuvres and precise navigation to rendezvous with the small body. The mission is part of China’s broader effort to demonstrate advanced planetary‑sample‑return capabilities and to expand knowledge of asteroid composition.
The successful arrival marks a milestone for the Chinese space programme and provides a new opportunity to study the primordial material that makes up the solar system’s building blocks. The collected samples are expected to be analysed by Chinese laboratories in the coming months, potentially offering fresh insights into the origins of planetary bodies.
