China’s New Ethnic Unity Law Raises Concerns in Tibet

In July, China enacted a new Ethnic Unity Law designed to reinforce patriotism and national integration across all provinces, including areas inhabited by ethnic minorities. The legislation emphasizes the promotion of Mandarin Chinese and the cultivation of a shared national identity, citing the need to strengthen cohesion among the country’s diverse populations.

The law has drawn criticism from Tibetan activists, who argue that it represents another effort by Beijing to dilute local culture and language. Tibet, where Han Chinese settlement has increased in recent years, has seen Mandarin become more prominent in public life. While officials claim the measure will enhance unity, opponents contend it threatens the preservation of Tibetan heritage and identity.
