China’s EV Boom Strains Battery Recycling Capacity
The rapid rise in electric vehicle (EV) adoption is now producing a parallel surge in spent batteries that must be disposed of or recycled. As more EVs reach the end of their operational life, the volume of lithium‑ion batteries destined for recycling facilities is projected to grow substantially over the next decade. This trend presents both an environmental opportunity and a logistical challenge, as the materials recovered—such as lithium, cobalt, nickel, and graphite—are critical for future battery production and can reduce the need for virgin mining.
Despite the clear need, the waste‑management sector has not yet scaled to meet the new demand.
