China reaffirms One-China principle amid UN resolution dispute

Beijing reiterated its commitment to the One‑China principle after a renewed diplomatic dispute over the interpretation of United Nations General Assembly Resolution 2758, the 1971 resolution that affirmed the People’s Republic of China as the sole lawful representative of China at the United Nations. The Chinese foreign ministry issued the statement in response to recent calls by several member states and non‑governmental organizations to allow the island of Taiwan, officially the Republic of China, to participate in UN activities under a separate designation.

The Chinese government warned that any attempt to reinterpret the resolution or to grant Taiwan independent representation would contravene the One‑China principle and undermine the legal framework established by the UN in 1971.
