China launches new maritime patrols near Taiwan, raising blockade concerns

The warning follows a series of coordinated patrols launched under a newly amended “Maritime Security Enforcement Act,” which expands the authority of Chinese vessels to board, inspect and detain ships operating within a 12‑nautical‑mile zone that Beijing claims as part of its “core interests.” The operations, which began earlier this month, have already resulted in the interception of several commercial vessels en route to Taiwanese ports, prompting concerns among regional security experts.

Security scholars from the Institute for Pacific Studies and the Center for Asian Maritime Policy noted that the scale and frequency of the patrols exceed previous routine enforcement actions and could be used to restrict Taiwan’s access to international shipping lanes.
