China launches its first school for robots

Beijing, China – The Chinese government announced the opening of the nation’s first dedicated robot school on Monday, a specialized institution aimed at advancing artificial intelligence and robotics research. The school, officially named the Institute of Robotic Cognition, will operate under the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, with an initial enrollment of 200 undergraduate and graduate students. “Our main goal is to empower robots’ brains,” said Dr. Li Wei, the institute’s director, emphasizing a curriculum that integrates machine learning, neural network design, sensor integration, and autonomous decision‑making.

The institute will collaborate with leading domestic technology firms, including Huawei, Baidu, and DJI, as well as international partners such as the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and the German Research Center for Artificial Intelligence. Funding of 1.2 billion yuan has been allocated for state‑of‑the‑art laboratories, high‑performance computing clusters, and pilot projects that test robotic systems in manufacturing, healthcare, and urban infrastructure. Officials expect the school to produce a new generation of engineers capable of developing more adaptable and intelligent robotic platforms, positioning China at the forefront of global robotics innovation.
