China dispatches troops to Tibet after mudslide

China’s central government has deployed hundreds of military personnel to Gyirong, a border town in the Tibet Autonomous Region, following a deadly mudslide that struck the area earlier this week. The rapid mobilization of troops, drawn from nearby garrisons, is intended to support local emergency responders in search‑and‑rescue operations, provide medical assistance to the injured, and help clear debris that has blocked access routes to the town.

Authorities reported that the mudslide caused multiple fatalities and left several residents trapped under rubble, prompting the People’s Liberation Army to establish temporary shelters and coordinate the distribution of food, water and essential supplies. Officials emphasized that the military’s presence will remain until the affected community is stabilized and infrastructure repairs are underway, underscoring the government’s commitment to swift disaster relief in the remote border region.
