Chile researchers develop copper vests to aid injured penguins
Researchers in Chile have developed a novel protective garment for injured penguins, consisting of snug red vests woven with copper and zinc fibers. The design aims to accelerate healing by leveraging the antimicrobial and anti‑inflammatory properties of these metals, which are thought to reduce bacterial colonization and promote tissue repair in the birds’ wounds.
The vests were tested on a small cohort of Magellanic penguins (Spheniscus magellanicus) that sustained injuries during a recent storm‑related event. Preliminary observations indicate that penguins wearing the vests show faster wound closure and fewer secondary infections compared with those receiving conventional bandaging. The project, led by a team at the Universidad de Chile’s Marine Biology Institute, is part of a broader effort to improve rehabilitation protocols for marine wildlife affected by climate‑related disturbances.
If the findings are confirmed in larger trials, the copper‑zinc vests could become a standard tool for wildlife rescue centers across the Southern Hemisphere, offering a low‑cost, effective means of enhancing recovery for penguins and potentially other marine species.
