Chile fits injured Humboldt penguins with protective recovery vests

In coastal regions of Chile, wildlife rehabilitators have begun fitting injured Humboldt penguins with specially designed recovery vests. The garments are intended to shield open wounds and surgical stitches from the birds’ own movements and the abrasive marine environment, thereby reducing the risk of infection and promoting more efficient healing.

The vests, made from lightweight, water‑resistant material, are tailored to each bird’s size and secured with adjustable fastenings that allow the penguins to swim and preen without compromising wound protection. Veterinarians overseeing the program report that the devices have already lowered the incidence of post‑operative complications, enabling a higher rate of successful releases back into the wild.
