Chesapeake Bay underwater grasses rise 7% in 2025
Submerged aquatic vegetation (SAV), a primary gauge of ecological condition in the Chesapeake Bay, rose by 7 percent in 2025, according to a report released by researchers at William & Mary’s Virginia Institute of Marine Science and the Batten School of Leadership and Public Policy. The increase was identified through a combination of satellite imagery, aerial surveys, and field sampling conducted throughout the Bay’s tributaries and mainstem during the spring and summer monitoring windows.
The study attributes the growth to a series of coordinated restoration initiatives, including expanded seagrass planting, improved water‑quality measures targeting nutrient runoff, and the recovery of oyster populations that help clarify water. Compared with the 2023 baseline, when SAV coverage had plateaued, the 2025 gain marks the first measurable upward trend in nearly a decade. Researchers note that while the 7 percent rise is modest, it signals a positive response to ongoing management actions and suggests that the Bay’s resilience is strengthening.
