Chalk artists paint portraits of Flight 93 victims at Shanksville memorial

Chalk artists gathered at the Flight 93 National Memorial in Shanksville, Pennsylvania, to render life-size portraits of the 40 passengers and crew members who perished when United Airlines Flight 93 crashed on September 11, 2001. The temporary installations, created on a paved section of the memorial plaza, are part of a series of events marking the 25th anniversary of the attacks and are intended to honor the individuals whose actions helped thwart further tragedy.

The artists, organized by a nonprofit arts collective, spent several days sketching and filling the images with colored chalk before the memorial’s opening ceremony on September 8. Each portrait includes the name of the subject and a brief biographical note provided by families, allowing visitors to connect personally with the victims. The chalk works will remain visible for a week before being washed away, after which they will be documented and archived as part of the anniversary’s historical record.
