CGM Study Finds Greater Glucose Variability Linked to Better Quality of Life in Diabetes Patients
A study presented at the European Association for the Study of Diabetes (EASD) Annual Meeting in Milan on September 28–October 2 reports that among people with type 1 or type 2 diabetes, days with greater glucose variability—within safe limits—were followed by higher quality‑of‑life scores than days with stricter glycemic control. Researchers paired continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) data with daily self‑reported quality‑of‑life ratings to examine the relationship between glucose patterns and everyday wellbeing.
The analysis indicates that the burden of maintaining tighter glucose targets may limit patients’ ability to engage in routine activities, whereas a slightly wider range of readings that remains within clinically acceptable bounds is associated with better subjective wellbeing. These findings challenge the prevailing assumption that stricter control always translates into improved quality of life and suggest that personalized management plans should consider the trade‑off between glycemic precision and patient experience.
If corroborated by further research, the results could prompt clinicians and guideline developers to re‑evaluate targets for glucose control, emphasizing a more balanced approach that preserves patients’ functional freedom while maintaining safe glucose levels.
