Catnip Lotion Matches Deet in Repelling Mosquitoes, Study Shows

Researchers in Uganda have demonstrated that a simple, locally produced catnip lotion can repel mosquitoes as effectively as the globally used chemical repellent DEET. In field trials conducted across several rural villages, the Nepeta cataria extract—containing the compound nepetalactone—was applied to human volunteers and showed comparable protection against mosquito bites over a 12‑hour period. The study, carried out by the Uganda National Institute of Scientific Research, measured bite incidence and mosquito landing rates, finding no significant difference between the catnip lotion and standard DEET formulations.

The findings highlight the potential of nepetalactone, a naturally occurring substance in catnip that induces euphoria in cats, as a cost‑effective, biodegradable alternative to synthetic repellents. Despite its insect‑repelling properties being known to entomologists, commercial products based on this herb had not been developed until now. The Ugandan trials suggest that a homegrown, plant‑based lotion could provide a sustainable and accessible mosquito‑control option for communities in malaria‑endemic regions.
