Cancer Drugs Boost Antibiotic Effectiveness Against MRSA
Scientists at the University of Galway have discovered a promising link between widely used anticancer drugs and antibiotics, opening a potential new avenue for treating methicillin‑resistant *Staphylococcus aureus* (MRSA) infections. The research team focused on identifying therapeutic strategies that could overcome the growing problem of antibiotic resistance, which renders many conventional treatments ineffective against this formidable superbug.
By screening a library of anticancer compounds for activity against MRSA, the investigators found that several agents—originally designed to target rapidly dividing cancer cells—also exhibit antibacterial properties when combined with existing antibiotics.
