Cancer Drug Shows Potential to Prevent Osteoporosis and Reduce Postmenopausal Weight
A new study from the University of East Anglia suggests that a cancer‑targeting compound could also prevent osteoporosis and counter metabolic changes that accompany menopause. Published in *npj Drug Discovery*, the research shows that the experimental drug, originally developed to inhibit tumour growth, protects bone density in preclinical models and reduces body fat accumulation in post‑menopausal subjects.
The investigators found that the compound interferes with pathways that drive bone loss and fat deposition, reversing some of the metabolic shifts seen after estrogen decline. In laboratory animals, treated groups maintained higher bone mass and exhibited lower adipose tissue levels compared with controls. The findings point to a potential dual benefit of the drug for women at risk of osteoporosis and weight gain following menopause.
If the results translate to humans, the therapy could offer a single medication to address both bone health and metabolic health in post‑menopausal women. Further clinical trials will be required to confirm safety and efficacy before the compound can be considered for routine use.
