Canada welcomes EU proposal to become first associate member

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney expressed support on Thursday for the European Union’s proposal to grant Canada the bloc’s first “associate member” status. Speaking to EU lawmakers in Strasbourg, Carney emphasized the mutual benefits of deeper ties, stating, “Canada and Europe are each strong. Europe and Canada are stronger together.” The announcement follows months of diplomatic discussions aimed at formalising a closer partnership between the two regions.

The associate‑membership framework would allow Canada to participate in select EU policy areas and programs without full accession, potentially enhancing trade, regulatory cooperation, and joint initiatives on climate, security, and research. EU officials indicated that the proposal is now under review by member states, with a decision expected later this year. Carney’s endorsement signals a continued commitment from both sides to strengthen transatlantic relations and expand collaborative opportunities.
