Canada to seek unique security and economic alliance with EU, PM says
Ottawa’s prime minister used the opening day of the inaugural Canada Investment Summit on Tuesday to outline a strategy aimed at deepening the country’s economic and political connections with Europe. Addressing investors, corporate leaders and cabinet members, he described Canada as a “safe harbour” for foreign capital and emphasized the government’s intention to diversify trade away from its traditional reliance on the United States. The remarks were complemented by former Bank of Canada governor Mark Carney, who said Canada will pursue a “unique security and economic alliance” with European partners as part of a broader effort to position the nation within a “new global economic order.”
The summit, which brings together domestic and international stakeholders, highlighted opportunities for European firms to invest in Canadian infrastructure, technology and clean‑energy projects. Officials indicated that the proposed alliance would combine economic cooperation with coordinated security measures, reflecting a shift toward a more multilateral trade framework. By promoting Canada as a stable and lucrative base for overseas capital, the government aims to attract diversified investment flows and strengthen the country’s standing in a rapidly evolving global market.
