Canada seeks economic sovereignty as US aluminum tariffs raise costs

François Picard welcomed Jean Simard, President and CEO of the Aluminum Association of Canada, to discuss the ongoing U.S.–Canada aluminum dispute. Simard characterized the conflict as “a Trump posture that makes no sense,” emphasizing that it diverges from a typical trade disagreement and instead reflects a political stance rather than an economic necessity.

The association’s chief noted that American industrial demand for aluminum far exceeds domestic production capacity, rendering the imposed tariffs ineffective at curbing Canadian aluminum imports. He argued that protectionist measures do not eliminate the interdependence between the two nations’ metal markets; they merely increase its cost, potentially raising prices for downstream manufacturers and consumers in both countries.
