Canada Could Prevent Thousands of Deaths with Cleaner Transportation
A new study led by researchers at McGill University suggests that transitioning to cleaner transportation in Montreal and Toronto could avert over 3,600 premature deaths annually by significantly reducing ultrafine particle pollution. The research highlights the health risks posed by these microscopic pollutants, primarily emitted by vehicle exhaust, which penetrate deep into the lungs and bloodstream, exacerbating cardiovascular and respiratory diseases. The findings underscore the potential of transportation policy reforms to mitigate public health crises linked to air quality.
The study modeled the impact of replacing conventional vehicles with electric or low-emission alternatives, alongside improvements in public transit and active transportation infrastructure. Ultrafine particles, which are smaller than 0.1 micrometers in diameter, were identified as a critical target due to their ability to bypass the body’s natural defenses. By analyzing pollution dispersion patterns and population exposure, the team estimated that reducing these particles through cleaner transportation could lower mortality rates, particularly in densely populated urban areas where traffic congestion is highest.
The research adds urgency to calls for policy interventions, including stricter emissions standards and incentives for sustainable mobility. While the study focuses on two Canadian cities, its implications extend to urban centers globally grappling with air pollution. The authors emphasize that such measures not only address climate change but also offer immediate public health benefits, positioning cleaner transportation as a dual solution for environmental and societal challenges.
