Callie Khouri Adapts Thelma & Louise into a Musical

Callie Khouri, the 68‑year‑old screenwriter who won an Oscar for her debut feature *Thelma & Louise*, is now turning that landmark film into a stage musical. After her first screenplay earned her the Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay and her subsequent television series *Nashville* ran for six seasons, Khouri has taken on another first by scripting a musical adaptation of the 1990 feminist road movie. She hopes that the “world‑class case of beginner’s luck” that launched her career will carry over to the theater.

The project, which has been in development for a decade, faced early skepticism. Khouri had declined offers to adapt the story for the stage, citing the film’s dark themes of abusive marriage, attempted rape, murder and double suicide as a mismatch for musical theater. Her agent eventually arranged a meeting with a producer interested in the concept, and after some hesitation Khouri agreed to write the book. The production was later brought to life by producer Sonia Friedman, and it opened at London’s Young Vic starring Rachel Tucker and Amy Lennox. The adaptation retains the film’s core narrative of friendship and empowerment while adding musical numbers that underscore its emotional stakes.
