Bumblebees gather up to seven times more toxic metals than honeybees
Bumblebees are accumulating substantially higher levels of toxic heavy metals than honeybees, even when the two pollinator species forage side by side, according to a new study published this week. Researchers sampled individuals of both species from multiple agricultural and semi‑natural sites across the country and measured concentrations of lead, cadmium, mercury and arsenic in their bodies. The analysis revealed that bumblebees consistently carried concentrations up to three times greater than those found in honeybees, indicating a species‑specific exposure or uptake mechanism that had not been previously documented.
The elevated metal loads are of concern because heavy metals can impair neural function, reduce foraging efficiency, and compromise reproductive success in insects. Laboratory tests linked the observed concentrations to diminished learning ability and lower brood viability in bumblebees, suggesting that the hidden pollution could weaken colony health and pollination services. The authors caution that current environmental monitoring, which often relies on honeybee data, may underestimate the risk to other pollinators, and they recommend broader biomonitoring programs to better assess and mitigate heavy‑metal contamination in ecosystems.
