Bulimba Creek Tops Brisbane Waterways in Hazardous Microplastics
Queensland University of Technology (QUT) researchers have released a study detailing the composition of microplastics found in three Brisbane creeks. The investigation, published in the *Marine Pollution Bulletin*, identified Bulimba Creek as carrying the highest concentration of hazardous microplastic particles compared with the other sites examined.
Using advanced spectroscopic analysis, the team catalogued a range of polymer types, noting a predominance of polyethylene and polypropylene in all creeks, but a markedly greater proportion of toxic additives—such as phthalates and bisphenol A—within Bulimba Creek samples. The findings suggest that local industrial discharges and urban runoff may be contributing to the elevated levels of harmful microplastics in this waterway.
The study underscores the need for targeted pollution mitigation strategies in Brisbane’s urban streams. By pinpointing the specific types and sources of microplastic contamination, QUT researchers aim to inform city planners and environmental agencies as they develop policies to reduce plastic waste and protect aquatic ecosystems.
