Researchers from the Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine at the National University of Singapore have discovered a promising antiviral compound that effectively inhibits a broad spectrum of enteroviruses, including Enterovirus D68 (EV‑D68). The new agent targets the virus’s replication machinery, halting the spread of infection in cell‑culture models and animal studies. EV‑D68 is an emerging respiratory pathogen that has been linked to severe respiratory illness in children and adults, as well as to acute flaccid myelitis, a neurological condition that can result in paralysis.
The study, published in a peer‑reviewed journal, highlights the compound’s potency against multiple enterovirus strains, suggesting a potential therapeutic platform for diseases that currently lack specific treatments. By neutralizing the virus before it can establish a robust infection, the drug could reduce the severity of outbreaks and limit the neurological complications associated with EV‑D68. The researchers emphasize that further pre‑clinical testing and safety profiling are required before clinical trials can begin.
