Brazil President Lula celebrates oil discovery near Amazon River

Environmentalists have lodged strong objections to a new exploratory drilling operation being conducted in the offshore waters at the mouth of the Amazon River. The project, initiated by PetroBrasil Energy in partnership with an international consortium, marks the first offshore hydrocarbon exploration in a region known for its extensive mangrove forests, rich biodiversity and the proximity of several indigenous fishing communities.

The critics, represented by the Amazon Coastal Alliance and the Global Marine Conservation Network, argue that seismic testing and drilling pose risks of oil spills, disruption of marine habitats and long‑term damage to the river’s ecological balance. Government officials from Brazil’s National Agency of Petroleum, Natural Gas and Biofuels (ANP) confirmed that the activity is proceeding under a temporary permit pending a comprehensive environmental impact assessment, and they have pledged to monitor compliance with mitigation measures. The agencies involved have scheduled a public hearing for next month to review the findings and determine whether the exploratory phase will be extended, modified, or halted.
