BP shuts down BP Ventures after nearly 20 years
BP Ventures, the corporate venture‑capital arm of energy giant BP, announced that it will cease operations, ending a program that has been active for almost two decades. The decision, disclosed in a statement to investors and the media, marks the conclusion of a unit that was established to invest in emerging technologies and startups aligned with BP’s transition to lower‑carbon energy solutions.
The shutdown follows a series of internal reviews that cited “lackluster returns” as a primary factor in the decision, according to sources familiar with the matter. BP said the firm’s portfolio, which included investments in areas such as renewable power, digital energy platforms, and advanced materials, had not delivered the financial performance expected. The company will now focus its capital allocation through its core business units and other strategic initiatives, while winding down existing portfolio holdings in an orderly manner.
