Boox Picco e-reader expected to launch in November

Boox has quietly been working on a new e‑reader that it dubbed the Picco, a device that was first hinted at in a July teaser but left most specifications unknown. Recent coverage from the IFA trade show has supplied a handful of concrete details, although the company has yet to reveal a price. The Picco is positioned as Boox’s answer to the popular Xteink X4, but it diverges in several key ways.

Unlike the Xteink line, the Picco will not feature the magnetic backplate that allows the X4 to attach to a phone. Instead, it will sport a 3.97‑inch e‑paper display that is fully touchscreen, a change praised by The Verge’s Andrew Liszewski as a “welcome upgrade” over the X4 Pro. The device will also include physical page‑turn buttons that can be programmed for different actions on short versus long presses. Storage is entirely external; the Picco will rely on a microSD card for all user data, with no internal memory available.

While the reveal at IFA has clarified several design choices, Boox has not yet announced a retail price or release date.
