BNITM researchers model West Nile virus spread in Germany through 2025
Researchers at the Bernhard Nocht Institute for Tropical Medicine (BNITM) are employing a suite of mathematical models to estimate the future spread of West Nile virus across Germany. By integrating climatic data, mosquito ecology, and human travel patterns, the models project how the virus could move through different regions over the coming seasons.
In parallel, the team is developing forecasting tools that predict mosquito population dynamics and assess the effectiveness of various surveillance and prevention strategies. These tools aim to identify which interventions—such as targeted insecticide use, public awareness campaigns, or early warning systems—are likely to yield the greatest reduction in virus transmission.
The BNITM’s work seeks to provide public health authorities with actionable insights, enabling more efficient allocation of resources and timely implementation of control measures.
