Biodegradable Nanobone Could Regrow Jawbone in Children with Cleft Lip and Palate
Children born with cleft lip and palate often require invasive bone‑graft surgery to repair gaps in the jawbone, a procedure typically scheduled when they reach 10 to 12 years of age. The timing is dictated by the need for sufficient bone volume and the risk of interfering with facial growth. A new development from researchers at the University of Sydney could change that paradigm. They have engineered a biodegradable “nanobone” material that encourages the body’s own healing mechanisms to regrow bone, potentially offering a less invasive alternative to the long‑standing surgical approach.
The nanobone is composed of nanoscale scaffolds that gradually dissolve as new bone tissue forms around them. In preclinical studies, the material has shown the ability to stimulate osteogenic cells and support vascularization, key factors for successful bone regeneration. Because it degrades naturally, it eliminates the need for a second operation to remove a graft or hardware, reducing surgical burden and postoperative complications for young patients.
If further trials confirm its safety and efficacy, the nanobone could become a standard treatment for cleft‑related bone defects, shortening recovery times and improving long‑term facial development. The research represents a significant step toward modernizing a procedure that has remained largely unchanged for more than half a century.
