Bharatpur authorities begin burying unidentified flood victims in Nepal

The death toll from the recent floods in Nepal continues to climb, with authorities reporting new bodies recovered each day. Many of the remains are already in advanced stages of decomposition, making identification difficult and posing significant health risks. To mitigate these dangers and the strong odors associated with the decaying bodies, officials have begun burying the victims without formal identification.

In a recent visit, FRANCE 24’s special correspondents traveled to Bharatpur, a town in southern Nepal, to witness one of the burial sites. The site is part of a larger effort to manage the influx of remains, as the country struggles to cope with the aftermath of the catastrophic floods. The burials are conducted in a manner that prioritizes public health and safety, even though the lack of identification leaves families without closure.
