Belgium's Comprehensive Approach to Handling Sexual Violence Against Minors Sets a High Standard

In the wake of the Lyhanna case, which highlighted the inadequacies of France's fragmented system for addressing sexual violence against minors, Belgium has emerged as a model for effective care and support. At the heart of its approach are the Centres for the Care of Sexual Violence (CPVS), which bring together a team of specialists under one roof. These centres provide a comprehensive and coordinated response to victims, ensuring that they receive immediate and continuous care from a doctor, forensic nurse, psychologist, and specialized police officer.

The CPVS model was first tested in three hospitals, and its success was evident in the positive results of the initial evaluation. Recognizing the value of this approach, the Belgian government expanded the program nationwide in 2020. By providing a single point of entry for victims, the CPVS centres aim to reduce the trauma and stress associated with navigating multiple institutions and services.
