Bangladesh protests over rising living costs draw thousands

Dhaka – Thousands of Bangladeshis took to the streets this week in what officials describe as the first large‑scale demonstrations since Tarique Rahman assumed the premiership. Demonstrators converged on the capital’s central avenues, carrying placards and chanting slogans that highlighted soaring food prices, higher utility bills and the broader increase in the cost of living. Police deployed additional personnel to manage the crowds, and several arrests were reported as organizers called for the government to implement immediate relief measures.

The protests come amid persistent inflationary pressures that have pushed consumer prices upward for several consecutive months, prompting concerns among households and small‑business owners. The Rahman administration, which took office less than a year ago, has pledged to review fiscal policies and accelerate social‑welfare programs, but critics argue that existing support schemes remain insufficient. Government spokespeople affirmed their commitment to dialogue, stating that a task force will be convened to assess the grievances and propose targeted interventions aimed at stabilising essential commodity prices.
