Bangladesh landslides kill nine in Cox's Bazar refugee camp

Hillsides collapsed at four separate sites within displacement camps in Cox’s Bazar, southeastern Bangladesh, during the current monsoon season. The incidents were reported early this week as heavy rainfall intensified, triggering erosion and instability on the steep slopes that support the camps.

The collapse affected several thousand residents who live in makeshift shelters on the hillsides, many of whom are Rohingya refugees. Rescue teams from the Bangladesh Army and the Bangladesh Red Crescent were dispatched to the sites, where they are conducting search and rescue operations and providing emergency medical care. Preliminary investigations suggest that the combination of prolonged rainfall and inadequate slope stabilization measures contributed to the failures, though officials are still assessing the precise causes.

Authorities are reviewing the safety protocols for hillside settlements and have pledged to strengthen erosion control measures. The government has also called for increased monitoring of weather conditions and rapid response plans for vulnerable communities in the region.
