Aztec manuscript returns to Mexico after 186 years abroad

Paris – The Bibliothèque nationale de France has agreed to lend a rare manuscript chronicling the history of the Aztec civilization to Mexico for a temporary exhibition. The codex, dating from the early colonial period, is part of the French national library’s collection of Mesoamerican documents and will be displayed at Mexico’s National Institute of Anthropology and History (INAH) later this month. The loan, arranged through a bilateral cultural agreement, is set to run for six months, after which the manuscript will return to Paris for continued conservation work.

Curators note that the manuscript offers a unique perspective on pre‑Hispanic society, combining indigenous iconography with Spanish annotations. Its presence in Mexico is expected to enhance scholarly research and public understanding of Aztec heritage, complementing ongoing exhibitions of related artifacts. The collaboration underscores the continued partnership between French and Mexican institutions in preserving and sharing world cultural patrimony.
