Autumn Meteor Showers and Supermoons Highlight Night Sky
Astronomers are gearing up for a spectacular series of celestial events this season, featuring several prominent meteor showers and a handful of supermoons that promise bright, clear skies for stargazers. A supermoon occurs when the Moon reaches perigee—its closest point to Earth—while also coinciding with a full or new Moon, creating a noticeably larger and brighter appearance. Coupled with the annual peaks of meteor activity, these phenomena provide a rare opportunity for both casual observers and seasoned astronomers to witness the night sky in vivid detail.
The most significant meteor showers this year include the Eta Aquariids, which peak around April 22, offering up to 30 shooting stars per hour under dark skies, and the Perseids, reaching their maximum on August 12 with a similar rate of bright meteors.
