Australian charts ban AI-generated songs but allow AI-supported tracks

The Official Charts Company announced that songs incorporating artificial‑intelligence technology will remain eligible for the UK singles and albums charts, provided the AI is used only in a “supporting role.” The clarification follows recent industry debate over how AI‑generated content should be classified, with the company emphasizing that the core creative contribution must still come from human artists, songwriters, or producers.

Under the new guidance, AI may be employed for tasks such as vocal enhancement, instrument synthesis, or lyric assistance, but the final composition must be principally human‑driven. Tracks that rely entirely on AI‑generated melodies, lyrics or vocals will be excluded from chart calculations. The policy aims to preserve the integrity of the charts while accommodating the growing use of AI tools in music production, and it will be applied to all chart‑eligible releases from the start of the next reporting week.
