Australia to fast‑track datacentre approvals and create national AI office, says PM Albanese

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese announced on Wednesday that Australia will become the first country to consolidate the economic, social, national‑security and environmental aspects of artificial intelligence under a single national framework. In a major speech, he unveiled plans for a new Office of AI within his department, tasked with coordinating policy, regulation and investment across the sector.

Albanese said the government will introduce streamlined approval processes for AI projects, including data‑centre development, to give investors greater certainty and to maintain public confidence as the technology advances.
