Aung San Suu Kyi meets Red Cross official, Myanmar president's office says

The Myanmar military seized power in February 2021, detaining State Counsellor Aung Suu Kyi, a Nobel Peace Prize laureate, and dissolving the elected civilian government. The coup sparked widespread protests and a nationwide resistance movement, prompting the armed forces to launch a violent crackdown that escalated into an armed conflict involving ethnic militias, pro‑democracy groups and the Tatmadaw.

Since the takeover, the fighting has spiraled into a civil war that has claimed the lives of more than 100,000 people across all sides, according to United Nations estimates. The humanitarian situation continues to deteriorate as displacement, food insecurity and human rights abuses intensify, underscoring the deepening crisis in the Southeast Asian nation.
