Anthropic disrupts AI-driven state surveillance operations in China, Iran and West Africa

Anthropic announced on Thursday that it had intervened to disrupt multiple state‑sponsored surveillance campaigns that employed its artificial‑intelligence models. The company said the operations, which it detected between January and July, were orchestrated from China, Iran and several West African nations and were directed at diaspora communities, including Hong Kong pro‑democracy activists and other dissident or minority groups.

Anthropic’s statement highlighted a broader trend of governments leveraging advanced AI tools to monitor and target individuals abroad. By disabling the identified surveillance networks, the firm aims to curb the misuse of its technology, while warning that the increasing accessibility of AI could amplify threats to privacy and civil liberties worldwide.
